Nuku district chief from Tailevu, Turaga na Tui Nabou Semi Matalau says both a chaplain and a counsellor should be posted to Government schools.

These two, he said, were professionals in their fields.

While the chaplain specialises in spiritual development the counsellor helps students prepare for college or select careers, he said.

Mr Matalau said parents brought up their children spiritually and this should be continued by a chaplain in school.

“Teachers cannot continue this in school, but only a chaplain can because he specialises in spiritual development,” he said.

Ucunivanua chief Ratu Sevanaia Verata and Namalata district chief Ratu Isaia Tuirakiwaimaro said they support Mr Matalau.

Ratu Isaia said the spiritual development of a student could only be looked after by a chaplain.

He said Government schools retaining chaplains from 2020 would help in the spiritual development of the church congregation in divisions.
