Two teenagers are dead in what the Police has described as a horror plunge into the Wainibuka River when the vehicle they were in veered off the road in Wainibuka, Tailevu.
Dead are Timoci Natutusai Varamusi, 14, of Nabuna, Tavua and Vulolo Qurai, of Savutalele settlement in Tacirua, Suva.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the tragedy happened at Naviveiwali which is just close to Naqia in Wainibuka Tailevu yesterday morning.
“The victims were passengers in a car driven by a 30-year-old man from Nabuna in Tavua and were heading towards Suva. The accident happened after 3am,” Ms Naisoro said.
“The driver is alleged to have lost control of the vehicle causing it to veer off the road and plunge into the nearby river.
“The driver allegedly slept on the wheel resulting in the tragic accident.”
Ms Naisoro said nearby villagers were quick to the scene.
She said the villagers assisted in bringing the victims out from the vehicle and rushed them to the Korovou Hospital.
She said the two teenagers were pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver remains under observation at the Korovou Hospital and will be questioned by the Police once he is cleared by medical authorities.
Investigations are continuing.
