The seaweed farming villages of Dromuna and Vatani on Kaba in Tailevu have ventured into value-adding seaweed products such as lotion and soap.

The Kaba seaweed cluster group is one of the most successful seaweed projects in the country and has of 10 farmers, who put in the considerable effort for their income generation.

The Minister for Fisheries, Semi Koroilavesau, has also taken the ministry’s side of services to the people on another level.

“A financial literacy training will be conducted for seaweed farmers as well as an income generation exercise,” he said.

Mr Koroilavesau recently met seaweed farmers in Kaba, Tailevu, to thank them and offer timely advice and encouragement.

The visit created an opportunity for the farmers to also share their clusters achievements and aspirations.

It also allowed the visiting team, led by the minister, an opportunity to clarify issues of concern.

During the discussions, Mr Koroilavesau said the Fijian Government had a commitment to reach rural communities and help them grow and be self-sufficient.

“This includes helping out in any way possible to elevate the profile of seaweed and help it grow,” Mr Koroilavesau said.

Apart from general fisheries priorities, the visit was successful and all agreed that a Kaba Seaweed Progress Plan must be developed as well as an increase in seaweed lines and nursery.

Mr Koroilavesau added the ministry would put in more efforts to work with the women of Kaba in their seaweed value-adding venture and recognition of their seaweed label.

The Ministry of Fisheries will look at executing necessary work in the following weeks to address priority areas for the Kaba seaweed farmers.
