Ministry of Education, Heritage and Arts Permanent Secretary Iowane Tiko yesterday commended the improvement of the results of the Year 12 examinations for Ratu Kadavulevu School in the past three years.
Mr Tiko said in the past three years, the Year 12 results have shown tremendous improvement from 39 per cent in 2014, 52 per cent in 2015 and 94 per cent in 2016.
“This is the testament of the hard work and commitment of the teachers, students, the parents and the community,” he said.
Mr Tiko was speaking as the chief guest during the induction of the prefects at the school chapel and highlighted the fact that the school had reached it’s 93rd years of existence.
He said the school was founded in 1924 as the Provincial School Western by Bau high chief Ratu PenaiaKadavulevu, and was later renamed in his honour.
Mr Tiko said RKS had been faced with a lot of challenges lately.
“They have faced challenges to restore the school to its glory days,” he said.
“Academically, the results in the recent past has raised a lot of concerns and as the manager of the school, I am here to challenge to rise the academic standing of this institution,” MrTiko said.
“The Year 13 in 2014 attained 24 per cent pass rate, 61 per cent in 2015 and dropped again to 33 per cent in 2016,” he said.
“The Year 10 attained 28 per cent in 2015 and 24 per cent pass in 2016.”
He questioned the teachers and parents on their output of last year.
“This raises a lot of questions for the teachers and students in this level in 2016.
“If Year 12 is able to achieve 94 per cent in the same school, then the teachers in Year 10 and 13 of 2016 need to be questioned on their output last year.
“I am posing a challenge to all teachers of Years 10 and 13 of 2016 to do some soul searching and identify areas of weakness and work towards a better outing this year,” Mr Tiko said.
