Ba Sangam College created history by winning their first ever medal at the Coca-Cola Games in Suva yesterday.
The moment came when Melaia Ralagakali won her first gold medal in the senior girls 800 metres final with a time of 2:23.89 minutes and half an hour later she ran the 400m final to win her second gold medal clocking a time of 59.74 seconds.
The Nabitu, Tailevu native was lost for words after her second win.
“I’m happy that I’ve won something for my school – this is my final year and to win two gold medals for my school is a job well done,” she told SUNsports.
“I thank my family especially my grandfather Lorima Nabure who’s in Ba and my mentor Mereoni Mili who is now a journalism student at USP (University of the South Pacific).
Ba Sangam College principal Jagat Ram said he’s happy that as a leader of the school, history has been created in Ba Sangam College.
“Melaia’s effort dedication and sacrifice in the morning and afternoon has finally paid off and we are proud of her achievements.”
Meanwhile, in the senior boy’s 400m final was a tie in the first place between Ratu Kadavulevu School’s Josua Koro and Nikola Raiqeu of St John’s College as they both stopped the clock at 49 seconds.
Richard Elder of RKS won gold in the intermediate boys with a time of 50.25sec while Varanisese Kalisitiana of Vaturova Koroalau High School won the intermediate girls grade with a time of 59.58sec.
Cuvu College’s Ronald Sharma won the junior boys with a time of 53.27 sec while Kesaia Boletakanakadavu won the junior girls grade with a time of 59.17 sec.
Cuvu College won their second gold medal in the 400m sub junior boys through Iliesa Ratubalavu who clocked 55.23sec while Adi Cakobau School’s Melania Ranadi won the girl’s grade with a time of 60.45sec.
