Tagicakibau Sacrifices School Holiday

While other school students are occupied with holiday jobs and fun activities this festive season, Ilaitia Tagicakibau chose otherwise.

The 16-year-old Sila Central High School student joined his district team at the R.C Manubhai Nataleira 7s which began yesterday at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori.

The Naimalavau, Nakelo, Tailevu lad played for the first time with the Nakelo Babas side.

“I started playing rugby ever since I was young,” he said.

“I always pray with the intention that God gives me an opportunity so that I can progress in this sport and pursue a career out of rugby.”

Tagicakibau said he was encouraged to join the team by a fellow youth from his village.

“I started training with the team until I joined them in tournaments” he said.

“Our coach usually advise us to treat each game as a final.”

Tagicakibau said his rugby idol was Fijian Drua and Flying Fijian flanker Kitione Salawa.

“I admire the way that he plays the game and I also play in the flanker position for my school in the under 16 grade,” he said.

“I also play rugby league for the school in the center position.”

He was grateful for the support he has received from home for his rugby passion.

Despite the criticisms he received, he stayed focused on his goals.

“I often seek advise from the older players on how to improve my game and hopefully be a professional rugby player.

“If that doesn’t work out then my plan B is to join the British Army,” Tagicakibau added.
