Sajendra Lal was relaxing in his living room in Verata, Wailevu, Tailevu, yesterday when a landslide hit his home like a stealth bomber.
“I was unaware, it struck at the back of my home,” Mr Lal said.
He said he was lucky the landslide did not bury his entire house and him alive.
The 46-year-old said he was going to the bathroom when he noticed mud and water in the home.
“I went to visit the bathroom when I saw my backyard covered with mud, so I tried clearing it.
“When I went back inside I saw water and mud enter my whole house from another direction and it happened so fast,” he said.
Mr Lal said there were many excavations lately on the slope and he believed it triggered the landslide.
“This is the first time in my life to have experienced such an incident so I wasn’t really prepared and wasn’t expecting it. But we can’t do anything when nature calls,” he said.
Mr Lal was with some of his relatives when the landslide happened. No one was hurt. He could not estimate the cost of the damage.
